Faceting Apprentice
Alongside Magus Gems, we founded Faceting Apprentice, our gemcutting school based in Lyon, France.
Created by professional lapidaries Victoria Raynaud and Justin K Prim, the school was born from our shared passion for gemstones, craftsmanship, and the transmission of both traditional and modern faceting techniques.
Our in-person classes are deliberately kept small, allowing each student to work directly with us and receive individual guidance throughout the cutting process.
From complete beginners discovering faceting for the first time to experienced cutters looking to deepen their understanding of gemstone cutting and design, our courses focus on developing both technical skills and a true understanding of how a gemstone works.
Rather than simply learning how to follow a diagram, students are encouraged to understand proportions, angles, light behaviour, polishing, and the decisions behind a successful cut.
Learn Faceting in Lyon, New York, and Online
We offer several course formats throughout the year, including:
- One-day introductory faceting classes
- Two-week intensive Faceting Bootcamps
- Advanced in-person classes focused on recutting, repairing and restoring gemstones
- Online gemcutting classes, allowing students to continue learning from anywhere in the world
Our online courses make it possible to explore faceting techniques, gemstone design, and more advanced concepts remotely, while benefiting from the same practical knowledge and experience that shape our in-person teaching.
Our in-person classes in Lyon are available in English, and our online courses make Faceting Apprentice accessible to an international community of gemstone cutters.
Our goal is simple: to preserve and transmit the craft of gem cutting while giving the next generation of lapidaries the knowledge, technical understanding, and confidence to develop their own approach.
